Folsom Connect

Folsom, CA Community

Folsom, California, is a city that takes its biking seriously. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, a family out for a weekend ride, or a visitor itching to stretch your legs, Folsom’s trail network rolls out a welcome mat of smooth pavement, lakeside views, and a few surprises along the way.

Over 50 Miles of Trails: Where Will Your Wheels Take You?

Folsom boasts more than 50 miles of Class I bike and pedestrian trails. These aren’t just any trails. They’re wide, paved, and car-free, perfect for everything from speedy road bikes to wobbly first-timers with training wheels. The city’s trail system connects neighborhoods, parks, and lakes, making it easy to swap four wheels for two without missing a beat.

You can pick up a printed trail map at the Parks & Recreation registration counter at 48 Natoma Street. Or, if you’re more of a digital navigator, the city’s website has downloadable maps and info to keep you on track.

The Johnny Cash Trail: Ride the Line

No Folsom biking article is complete without mentioning the Johnny Cash Trail. This 2.5-mile paved path is a tribute to the Man in Black himself. It’s not just a bike ride; it’s an art experience in progress, with public art installations planned along the route. The trail links up with the American River Parkway and Historic Folsom, so you can mix music history with riverside scenery.

Lake Natoma Trail: Water Views and Wildlife

The Lake Natoma Trail is a local favorite. This scenic path hugs the shoreline of Lake Natoma, offering plenty of shade and the occasional heron sighting. It’s a gentle ride, making it ideal for families or anyone looking for a peaceful spin. Watch for rowers gliding by and paddleboarders showing off their balance.

Folsom’s Trail Etiquette: Keep It Friendly

Biking in Folsom comes with a few simple rules to keep everyone smiling:

  • Cyclists keep to the right side of the trail.

  • Pedestrians walk on the left, facing oncoming bikes.

  • Dogs must be on a leash (max 6 feet).

  • Pull off the trail if you need to stop: nobody likes a surprise obstacle.

  • Single file, please: especially when trails get busy.

  • 15 MPH speed limit: This isn’t the Tour de France.

  • Leave no trace: pack out your trash and pick up after your pup.

Adopt-A-Trail: Trail Love in Action

If you want to give back to the trails you ride, Folsom’s Adopt-A-Trail program lets individuals, families, or businesses help keep the city’s bike paths in tip-top shape. Adopters commit to regular trail checks and cleanups, and sponsorships are available for those who want to support with their wallets as well as their work gloves. It’s a great way to meet fellow trail fans and give your favorite route some extra TLC.

Bike Lockers: Park and Ride With Peace of Mind

Worried about leaving your bike behind? Folsom offers on-demand bike lockers at the Glenn Drive and Historic Folsom (Sutter Street) stations. These secure lockers use the BikeLink system, so you can lock up and wander without worry.
